What Are the Early Signs of Dementia?

It is only natural to feel as though we have lost some of our memories as we age. How do you discern whether or not memory loss is a natural part of aging between a sign of something more serious?

Do you know how to recognize the symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease? It may begin gradually. It can be as simple as having difficulty speaking with loved ones. They may notice a change in speech patterns, vocabulary, and even personality in the way one delivers his or her speech.

Then, there are also the cognitive functions that may begin showing signs of decline: concentrating, focusing, learning, making judgments, as examples. Those who have Alzheimer’s disease or dementia often display a notable difference between who they were and who they are in that present moment.

Recognizing the Signs

At All Seasons Residential Assisted Living, we are here to make a difference in the lives of all who come to us for care. Below, we have compiled a list of the typical early warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

  1. Memory loss.
  2. Confusing time, location, or area last traveled.
  3. Losing items or misplacing items, valuable or not, quickly.
  4. Poor judgment or reaction time.
  5. Problems with thinking about complex or abstract concepts.
  6. Problems with speaking or writing
  7. Showing difficulty with tasks previously familiar.
  8. Trouble with deciphering visuals or spatial relationships.
  9. A noted change in mood, personality, or behavior.
  10. Withdrawing socially, coinciding with the possibility of anxiety or depression.

Many people ask us how to tell the difference between the signs of dementia and normal memory loss due to aging? Dementia is often much more extreme. You might forget portions of memory, but someone who shows signs of dementia may forget that the experience had ever occurred.
